How to Play Disc Golf

Think of disc golf like traditional golf. Each course has a goal, but instead of a hole, the disc golf goal is an above-ground metal net called a basket. It is each player's objective to sink their frisbee into the basket in the least number of throws.

Equipment

  • Disc: A frisbee, these come in all shapes and sizes, just like golf clubs.
  • Scorekeeping Cards: These can be managed by paper or through online apps, like UDisc.
  • Mini Markers: Small, circular markers to indicate where a frisbee landed along a course.
  • Range Finders: For more competitive games, range finders are handheld devices to measure the distance between the lie and the basket.
  • Disc Retrievers: These are devices that allow you to retrieve discs that may have been inadvertently tossed into bushes, trees, or water.

Lingo and How to Play

  • Tee Throws: These are the first throws of each player at a new basket.
  • Throwing Order: Whoever had the fewest throws at the previous basket starts off the next hole. After each player has taken their tee throw, whichever player is furthest from the basket starts off.
  • Lie: The location where the frisbee landed after a throw. These sports are to be marked with a mini disc marker.
  • Fairway Throws: These are throws taken from behind the lie.
  • Out of Bounds: Not every course will have an out-of-bounds area. If there is one, a player whose disc lands out of bounds must play their next throw from 1 meter in bounds.
  • Mandatory/ Mando: Along the fairway (the course), there may be poles or trees that are mandatory to be passed by each throw. Not only will a frisbee have to pass these points, but it will have to pass on the correct side (indicated by an arrow). Should a mandatory not be passed properly, the player will have to take their next throw from their previous lie.
  • Completion of Hole: A hole is completed when the frisbee lands in the basket; this includes if the frisbee is caught in the metal chains of the basket instead of sinking into the net.
