City of Flagstaff Fire Restrictions:

Stage One – 

  • No permits are issued for open burning within the City of Flagstaff.  
  • Use of charcoal barbecue grills are prohibited at all city parks, natural areas, and open space.
  • Use of charcoal barbecue grills are still allowed at private residences and private campgrounds within City of Flagstaff city limits. 
  • The sale or use of consumer-grade fireworks within the city is prohibited.

Stage Two - Previous restrictions remain in effect with the following additions/changes:

  • Charcoal barbecue grills are prohibited throughout the City of Flagstaff including private residences and private campgrounds.
  • Use of open fire pits and open flame devices without an on/off switch are prohibited, including those with a spark arrestor screen, throughout the City of Flagstaff.

Stage Three Partial Forest Closure - Previous restrictions remain in effect with the following additions:

  • All open-flame devices, including those with on/off switch are prohibited in all City parks and private campgrounds.
  • All open-flame devices, including those with on/off switch are prohibited at private residences during Red Flag conditions.
  • Entry is prohibited into all closed State and/or Federal lands within the City of Flagstaff: 
      • FUTS trails where they lead into or are within a US Forest Service/State Land closure area – Mars Hill, Tunnel Springs, Little America, Arizona Trail, Sinclair Wash, Pipeline Trail, Switzer Canyon are closed to public use and are signed.
      • Access points (roads and FUTS/Other trails) on Observatory mesa, Picture Canyon, McMillan Mesa and Switzer Canyon, where they lead into a US Forest Service/State Land closure area are closed to public and are signed.
      • Closures on federal/state lands within the City of Flagstaff are posted and available through the AZ State Forestry and Fire Management and US Forest Service websites. 

Stage Three Full Forest Closure - Previous restrictions remain in effect with the following addition:

  • The following FUTS trails are closed to public access (in closure areas) – Mars Hill, Tunnel Springs, Little America, Arizona Trail, Sinclair Wash, FUTS Trail Entrances going into the Forest Service Pipeline Trail, Switzer Canyon.

All grills, portable stoves, and devices that have on/off switches are allowed in private residence during fire restrictions except Red Flag days in Stage 3 fire restrictions. 

No person shall build, ignite or maintain any outdoor fire of any kind for any purpose in or on any wildland-urban interface area, except by the authority of a written permit from the Fire Department. EXCEPTION: Outdoor fires within inhabited premises or designated campsites where such fires are in a permanent barbecue, portable barbecue, outdoor fireplace, incinerator, grill, or any other outdoor fire appliance list for such purposes and are a minimum of 15 feet from any combustible materials or non fire-resistive vegetation.
