2. Arizona Snowbowl

14. Historic Route 66

Get your kicks on Route 66 by getting in a walk and learning about this historic road! Take a self-guided walking tour and visit local businesses along the way, including the family-friendly brewery Mother Road Brewing Company.

15. Museum of Northern Arizona

Discover the vibrant art, diverse Native cultures, and fascinating natural history of the Colorado Plateau at the Museum of Northern Arizona. Enhance your visit by requesting an activity kit to keep your children engaged and deepen their understanding of each exhibit. Afterward, head outside to enjoy the museum's outdoor nature trail, gardens, and adjacent playground, where kids can burn off some energy while still learning and having fun.

16. The Pioneer Museum

Learn about Flagstaff’s history when you tour the grounds of the Pioneer Museum. Find old locomotives used in the logging industry, historic farm equipment, a 1950s lung ventilator used to treat polio patients, and uncover the stories of the pioneers who left a mark on Flagstaff.

18. Lowell Observatory

Admire the stars at Lowell Observatory, a 130-year old observatory. Stargaze through telescopes, watch science demos, wander through exhibits, and more!

19. Meteor Crater

Created more than 50,000 years ago when a meteor struck the earth, Meteor Crater allows visitors of all ages to explore the impact of space on our planet. During your visit walk the rim and lookout over the expansive crater and enjoy hands-on learning at the interactive Discovery Center.

20. U.S. Geological Survey Astrogeology Center (USGS)

Walk on Mars, visit Grover - the rover USGS built to train Apollo astronauts, and admire giant images of our solar system’s planets at USGS. Founded in 1963, this is a must-visit location for an aspiring astrogeologist!

Tours are by appointment only and are led by Astrogeology scientists, please contact USGS at least 48 hours in advance.

Traverse Volcanic Attractions

21. Lava River Cave

Take the family spelunking in a lava tube cave formed roughly 700,000 years ago when molten rock erupted from a volcanic vent! While rare, you may see crickets, beetles, porcupines, squirrels and bats during your visit.

22. Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument

Hike the trails at Sunset Crater Volcano - one of around 600 cinder cones in the Flagstaff region - to be transported to another world. The unique geological formations caused by lava flows from 1,000 years ago serve as a reminder of the forces that have shaped the Earth over millennia.

Take a Day Trip

23. Walnut Canyon National Monument

Gaze into the past at Walnut Canyon, just 30-minutes from Sunset Crater and Wupatki National Monuments, by following trails to view cliff dwellings and visiting the museum to learn about the way of life for the Ancestral Puebloans.

24. Wupatki National Monument

Immerse yourself in history at Wupatki Pueblo, the largest freestanding pueblo in northern Arizona. This ancient site, once a vibrant center of trade and agriculture, offers a glimpse into the past like no other.

25. Bearizona Wildlife Park

Drive through the Arizona wilderness to spot bison, big horn sheep, wolves and black bear as you make your way to Fort Bearizona, where your family can admire small and baby animals and learn about wildlife through animal encounters.

26. Grand Canyon National Park

Hop in the car to visit one of the Seven Wonders of the World right in Flagstaff’s backyard– the Grand Canyon. Admire the expansive view from the rim, hike down into the canyon, or help your little one complete activities to become a Grand Canyon Junior Ranger.

27. Petrified Forest National Park

Wander through Petrified Forest National Park to marvel at awe-inspiring geological formations including the Painted Desert, Blue Mesa, petrified wood at Jasper Forest, and petrified logs glimmering with quartz crystals at Crystal Forest.

28. Red Rock State Park

Explore Red Rock State Park, a 286-acre nature preserve and environmental education center with some of the best hiking in Sedona. Embark on trails winding to Oak Creek's banks, admire red rock formations, and keep an eye out for wildlife.

29. Verde Canyon Railroad

Climb aboard the Verde Canyon Railroad for a 4-hour scenic journey through the backcountry. Soak up the scenery while enjoying comfortable seating and a variety of snacks or check out the open-air viewing car.
