Flagstaff, Ariz. — The artists at Mural Mice on Wednesday unveiled their refreshed Route 66 Shield Mural at the historic Flagstaff Visitor Center downtown.
The couple, R.E. Wall and Margaret Dewar, along with their young daughter Bonnielou Blossom Wall, had been hard at work on the project and celebrated the completion with city and tourism officials.
Mural Mice have created many of the iconic murals in the city, including one titled Community Reflections at Bushmaster Park and another called Citizens of the Universe at Coconino High School.
They initially painted the Route 66 shield mural in 2017, and were commissioned to refurbish it ahead of the 2026 Route 66 Centennial, which will commemorate the highway that formerly connected Chicago and Los Angeles. The mural at the Flagstaff Visitor Center is such a popular photo opportunity among the city’s 5 million annual visitors that many travelers couldn’t wait for it to be repainted and took pictures as the artists worked.
