Explore Vocal Collaborative Improvisation (CVI) and learn techniques for playful, spontaneous, co-created music-making.
Collaborative Vocal Improvisation (CVI), is an emerging practice of community singing where groups co-create spontaneous, layered music together. Unlike traditional choirs, CVI does not rely on sheet music or rehearsal but instead on listening, on-the-spot expression, and shared contribution. The result is an inclusive, playful, deeply connective experience. CVI transforms singing into a living, improvisational art form accessible to people of all abilities. This training is based on master artist Rhiannon’s “Vocal River” and will be taught by Meghan Callaghan, music therapist. For community musicians, CVI expands practice beyond performance into collaboration. Participants in the Vocal Labs will have opportunities to assist in facilitating at SongHearth and Sound Connections, two community multigenerational music-making programs.
