The Flagstaff Area National Monuments are excited to offer a workshop this spring that combines the joys of nature observation and poetry.
Drawing inspiration from the migration of birds in Walnut Canyon National Monument, this workshop offers participants an opportunity to learn about birding from national park ranger Ryan Carpenter, then write about their observations in a poetry workshop led by poet Jodie Hollander. In addition to using inspiration from the beauty of the natural world around us, we’ll also study examples of celebrated poems that effectively capture the wonder and awe of the world of birds. We’ll discuss techniques such as metaphor, imagery, repetition, and sound as well as cover effective use of line breaks. No experience is necessary. Free and open to all. Advance registration is required. Please contact: ryan_p_carpenter@nps.gov or (928) 526-3367 x 424 to reserve your spot. Bios: Jodie Hollander is the author of two poetry collections, My Dark Horses (Liverpool & Oxford University Press 2017) and Nocturne, Liverpool & Oxford University Press in 2023, which was longlisted for the Laurel Prize in nature writing. Hollander is the originator of 'Poetry in the Parks,' in conjunction with many National Parks and Monuments throughout the US. Ryan Carpenter has worked as an interpretive park ranger and education specialist with the National Park Service for 16 years. During his time with the NPS, Ryan has led numerous nature walks, many of which focus on bird observation. Ryan has also co-lead pelagic bird trips in Southeast Alaska and nocturnal bird trips in Tucson, AZ.
