Come join in to learn about native and nonnative plants and participate in a weed pull and restoration project of the Rio de Flag west of Thomas Elementary School near Bushmaster Park in East Flagstaff!
This grant-funded project is focused on the section of the Rio de Flag that parallels Thomas Elementary School between Linda Vista and Lockett Roads. The project will remove nonnative plants, reseed with native plants, and educate the community about which plants are native, nonnative, and most invasive. These actions will reduce wildfire risk, improve stream flow, increase species diversity, and benefit pollinators and other wildlife. Meet on the east side of Bushmaster Park at 9 am Saturday May 2nd or arrive later and meet us west of Thomas Elementary along the trail. You will learn to identify some of the worst weeds in Flagstaff and be provided a weed field guide for our area as well as large paper bags to take home to pull weeds in your own yard and neighborhood. Dr. Julie Crawford, local author of the book "Flagstaff Plants in Black and White; 160 of the most common plants of Flagstaff", will be on site to educate volunteers about plants, identification, ecology, and to answer questions. Wear a hat and sturdy shoes, and bring water. Event runs from 9 to 12 Saturday May 2 and again 9 to 12 Saturday May 30 - come for any part of the events.
