Overlanding is defined by the journey rather than the destination.
The term “overlanding” originated from European adventures across the continent into Asia. Later, it was used to describe the treks Australian ranchers took through the Outback. Now, however, it’s a word used to describe self-sustained, long-distance journeys through remote and rugged terrain.
Typically, overland trips are undertaken in off-road capable 4x4 trucks and SUVs or heavily modified adventure motorcycles. As the hobby has grown, though, it’s expanded to include more everyday vehicles like all-wheel drive Subarus.
Overlanding is all about getting off the grid, testing your mettle, and communing with friends, family, and your fellow overlanders. Overlanders range from families that enjoy long weekend trips into the nearest National Forest to long-term, cross-country, and round-the-world travelers.
Overland Expo West is held May 19-21, 2023 at Fort Tuthill County Park, Flagstaff, Arizona. Overland Expo is the world’s premier overlanding and adventure-travel event series. The weekend event is designed to bring passionate adventurers together to get trained, outfitted, and inspired to explore the world.
The event brings together the greatest collection of outdoor lifestyle, camping, and overland gear vendors from around the country. In 2021, the Overland Expo West hosted more than 400 exhibitors and more than 28,000 attendees.
Overland Expo hosts hundreds of session-hours of classes, demonstrations, films and presentations all curated to teach and train attendees in overland skills. Classes range from hands-on driving and riding skill lessons, navigation techniques, campfire cooking, nature photography, overlanding with kids, and opportunities to hear inspiring stories from world travelers and adventurers.
Attendees can stop by for the day with a day pass or the entire weekend with a three-day pass. Day-pass attendees can participate in off-road ridealong courses, check out hundreds of vendors, and access demos, roundtables, slideshows, and happy-hour events (beverages available for purchase). Weekend camping packages are also available.
Our premier education package, Overland Experience, provides access to unique education programming, including hands-on driver and rider training from teams of world-class off-road experts. Following the exclusive Welcome Reception, Overland Experience attendees receive weekend camping, special swag, and access to Happy-Hour events.
