Trails through Aspens and Ponderosa Pines
Hiking nirvana? That's Flagstaff. To start with one of the top hiking destinations in the world, the Grand Canyon, is only 83 miles away. But visitors can be in hiking nirvana in far shorter order. The trailhead for Humphreys Summit, the highest peak in Arizona, is 14 miles from downtown. The fabled red rock trails of Sedona are only 30 minutes south of town by car, and any local can give directions to their favorite aspen-lined path or scenic overlook. There's more than one reason Trailrunner Magazine named Flagstaff one of the "Top Seven Trail Towns in America," and each of those reasons comes with tree-lined paths and great views.
For those looking for a leisurely stroll closer to town, Flagstaff has a 33-mile urban trail system offering easier hikes on well-maintained trails. Coconino National Forest trailheads are only a few miles outside the city limits, accessing easy, intermediate, and advanced hikes for the appropriate enthusiast.
Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Hike
The trails are always cool. In the month of July, the average high temperature is 83 degrees F — on average, there are only three days every year that have temperatures higher than 90 degrees F. Conversely, four seasons are a reality in Flagstaff, and in January, the temperature drops to an average daily high of 43 degrees F.
Hikers should be prepared with water, sunscreen, rain jacket, lip balm and a hat, as quick changes in weather frequently happen in the mountains. Also, don't forget a camera as deer, elk, and plenty of birds are frequently seen on the trails.
