The Great Outdoors
Media Tour
May 19-22, 2008

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy Flagstaff's great outdoors. With average daily high temperatures of up to 82 degrees through August, the city's natural surroundings are inviting and diverse.

Flagstaff is situated at the base of the majestic San Francisco Peaks, encompassed by the 1.8 million acre Coconino National Forest.

Experience the great outdoors through a variety of activities ranging from rock climbing to Disc Golf.

Round-trip ground transportation from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport to Flagstaff will be provided by the CVB. Participants are responsible for airfare and incidental costs. The Flagstaff CVB will also cover the cost of accommodations and most meals for the duration of the trip.

Itinerary will include:

The Scenic Skyride at Arizona Snowbowl
The Scenic Skyride shuttles passengers to an elevation of 11,500 feet for panoramic views atop an extinct volcano. From this elevation, revel in the world-class scenery that stretches over 70 miles - including the Grand Canyon and downtown Flagstaff.

Flagstaff Disc Golf
Home to four world class courses, Disc Golf has become an extremely popular sport in Flagstaff, Arizona. Imitating much of the traditional characteristics of golf this fast growing sport utilizes different sized and weighted Discs instead of clubs and a ball. The geographic nature Flagstaff provides a unique and challenging landscape of trees, hills, rocks and even mountains, creating opportunities for both beginners and experts to enjoy.

Flagstaff High Country Trails at Buffalo Park
Explore and hike the Flagstaff Urban Trail System (FUTS) in and around Flagstaff.  People of all ages use the trail system for recreation. Buffalo Park is recommended as a scenic two-mile loop to hike, jog or walk the dog.

Explore Flagstaff Area National Monuments
Walnut Canyon features ancient cliff dwellings built in steep canyon walls where ancient pueblo residents lived nearly a thousand years ago. Sunset Crater Volcano began to form more than 900 years ago from a crack in the ground with molten rock that flowed from the base leaving black hardened lava. Wupatki National Monument was once home to the farmers and traders of the Anasazi and Sinagua people.

Vertical Relief Climbing Center
Vertical Relief is located in historic downtown Flagstaff. The center features over 6,500 square feet of widely varied climbing terrain to suit all abilities and climbing styles. Climbers also have the opportunity to visit an off-site location.

Vertical Adventure Climb Site: "The Pit" (La Petit Verdon)
Canyon Vista is Flagstaff's local sport area, only 15 minutes from downtown. Located in a shallow canyon, the limestone cliffs offer clean, steep stone with pockets and small edges. The ponderosa pine forested hillsides add to the beauty of the area and make for a pleasant location.

The Arboretum at Flagstaff
The Arboretum is a 200 acre botanical garden, research station, and environmental education center, known for its beautiful collection of 2,500 species of plants, guided tours, and spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, meadows and forests.

Lava River Cave
This mile-long lava tube cave was formed roughly 700,000 years ago by molten rock that erupted from a volcanic vent in nearby Hart Prairie.
